The Seventies: Where It All Began

The 1970s were the formative years of our league—a decade that established traditions, created rivalries, and produced the first champions whose accomplishments still echo through league history today.

The Lancaster Trojans emerged as the league’s first dynasty, capturing consecutive championships in 1976 and 1977. In those early seasons, the Trojans set the standard for success, earning their place among the league’s founding legends. Alongside them, teams such as the Rockwood Court Rams, Millidgeville Bombers, Screaming Seagulls, Irving Oilers, Saint John Roughriders and Surf City Vacation Club helped build the competitive spirit that would define the league.

By 1977, the league was expanding and becoming more competitive. New clubs such as the Put-On Packers, Sandy’s Stars, Alpines, Team Canada Post, and Allouettes added fresh energy to the competition. The Trojans successfully defended their title, but the growing list of contenders made it clear that future championships would be harder to win.

The balance of power shifted in 1978. While the Trojans remained among the league’s elite, teams such as the Labatts Touchdown Club, Walking Wounded, Fairville Aces, and Hartt Attack emerged as challengers. When the season concluded, Sports Experts captured the championship, ending the Trojans’ reign and proving that a new generation of contenders had arrived.

The decade reached its most competitive point in 1979. The standings reflected remarkable parity, with Labatts Touchdown Club and Runner’s World finishing atop the table at 8-1, closely followed by the Trojans and Sports Experts at 7-2. Kooler Kings, Fairvale Aces, Walking Wounded, Surf City, Buccaneers, and Raiders rounded out a deep and talented field. In the end, Runner’s World claimed the championship, becoming the fourth and final title winner of the decade.

Looking back nearly fifty years later, the numbers tell only part of the story. The real legacy of the 1970s lies in the colorful team names, the emerging rivalries, the championship dreams, and the foundation that was built one season at a time. These pioneers created the league culture that generations of players would inherit, making the Seventies not just the beginning of league history, but one of its most cherished chapters.

2025 “B” Championship (Super Saturday) Preview – NINETEEN PLUS BOMBERS at BANDITS

2025 “B” Final

11:00amNINETEEN PLUS BOMBERS vs. BANDITS

It’s only fitting that these two teams are facing off for the “B” Championship, given their ties in points at the end of the regular season. The tiebreaker went in favor of the Bandits, who edged out the Bombers by just 6 points in the points-for vs. points-against differential.

Both teams entered the league in 2015, marking their 10th year in competition this season.

Each team has already claimed four “B” Championships in their history. However, the Bandits come into this matchup as the defending champions, having won back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024. Now, they’re aiming for an unprecedented third straight championship.

For the Bombers, this marks their first “B” Final appearance since 2022, when they defeated the Bandits in a nail-biting 14-13 victory.

As always, Super Saturday promises thrilling and high-energy football. The question now is: which team will seize their fifth “B” title? Will this be another close contest? We’ll soon find out!
